Stories of the Post-Natural

The nonprofit Art Works for Change creates contemporary art exhibitions around the world to address critical social and environmental issues. We strive to harness the transformative power of art to promote awareness, provoke dialogue and inspire action.

Art Works for Change is grateful to Judy Pfaff for providing space at her Tivoli compound to showcase Stories of the Post-Natural – a Multi-media Art Exhibit by contemporary artists Bonny Leibowitz, Randy Jayne Rosenberg, and Belén Millán during the New York Upstate Art Weekend (July 21-25, 2023).

Nature has an object dimension that we all know well — trees, water, animals, etc., – all deeply embedded in our imagination as human-designed cultural concepts. But Nature also refers to intangible dynamics such as growth, decay, energy and transformation which are at the core of these artists´ conceptual and plastic pursuits.

Stories of the Post-Natural reflects on ecosystems that are constantly in motion where the boundaries between the natural and the artificial are blurred as a result of human intervention. In a world where plastics, toxic material and other human detritus have become part of the landscape, the idea of Nature as something “natural” is in crisis and needs to be revisited.

Outdoor interventions and a number of indoor multi-media installations (paintings, photography, video and assemblage) turn a country warehouse into a post-natural microcosm to reflect upon the “Nature” we are all creating and arouse a dialogue about categories and definitions that we uphold everyday but are no longer valid.
